2015 Stanley Cup Final Game 2: Tampa Bay Lightning news and notes

The Tampa Bay Lightning owned the best home record at 32-8-1 during the regular season, but they have gone just 5-6 at Amalie Arena during the post-season which includes dropping four of their last six contests.

On Saturday night (June 6) the Lightning will look to even the series at one-game apiece and stop a three-game losing streak, which includes a three-game home losing streak when the host the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Lightning hasnt lost four straight home games since the middle of the 2013-14 season when they lost five straight games from Dec. 28, 2013 vs. Montreal to Jan. 18, 2014 vs. San Jose.

Additionally, seven of the past eight games between the Blackhawks and Lightning have been decided by one goal. The Bolts has won four of their past five home contests against Chicago (regular season and postseason).

The Blackhawks, meanwhile, have won five of their past seven games as visitors (dating to Game 3 of the Second Round at MIN). They rank second in the NHL with six road wins during the playoffs (6-4), behind only the Lightning (7-3).

In Game 1, the Lightning suffered their first loss of the postseason when leading after two periods (8-1). Including the regular season, they suffered their first regulation loss in that scenario (41-1-2). The Lightning also lost for the first time when scoring the first goal during the playoffs (9-1). They went 35-7-4 in that scenario during the regular season.

In Game 1 on Wednesday night (June3) the Lightning turned on the red lamp early in the first period when Alex Killorn notched his eighth goal of the post-season with an amazing backhand no-look backhand, mid-air deflection that went past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford for a Bolts 1-0 lead at 4:31.

"You don't expect to score on those shots, but I was just trying to sort of hit it toward the net. Not something you practice, but lucky it went in, said Killorn.

Following a scoreless second period, the Bolts still maintaining a 1-0 lead saw that come to an end when Teuvo Teravainen notched his third goal of the post-season at 13:28, tying the score at 1-all.

Just 1:58 later, Antoine Vermette netted his third goal of the post-season and eventual game-winner when he beat goalie Ben Bishop, giving the Blackhawks a 2-1 at the 15:26.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Chicago became the first road team to post a regulation-time win via a third-period comeback in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and they also became the first team to win Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final in regulation when trailing while being shutout in the third period.

Bishop finished the game with 19 saves on 21 shots and the Lightning moved to 1-3 in Game 1's during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Chicagos Corey Crawford turned aside 22 shots on goal, including 17 straight to conclude the game.

The Lightning hope their luck of Game 2 success continues as they enter the game owning 3-0 record so far during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, while the Blackhawks are 2-1.

In the opening round against Detroit, the Lightning fell 3-2 in Game 1 despite holding a 46-14 advantage in shots. In Game 2, the Lightning jumped on the Red Wings early and built a 4-0 lead before cruising to a 5-1 victory. In the second round, the Bolts edged out a 2-1 victory in double overtime against Montreal in the first game and then came back with a 6-2 victory in Game 2. In the Eastern Conference finals, New York picked up a 2-1 victory on a late goal in Game 1, only to see the Lightning storm back with a booming 6-2 victory in Game 2. Now, here in the Stanley Cup Final the Bolts dropped the first game to Chicago 2-1.

Just learning from our mistakes is the biggest thing. We do a good job of that, breaking down the game a little bit and seeing what areas we can improve, whatever that might be, and going out the next game and fulfilling that. That seems to have worked out for us in the past, said Lightning defenseman Jason Garrison.

Valtteri Filppula recorded an assist and went 13-for-19 (68%) in the face-off circle in Game 1 against Chicago and has posted six points (one goal, five assists) over his past seven games and paces the Bolts for face-off percentage during the postseason at 55.0%.

Teams winning Game 2 have gone on to raise the Stanley Cup 74.7% of the time since the Final went to the best-of-seven format in 1939 (56-of-75 series), including nine of the past 12 occasions.

Another very interesting tidbit about Game 2s is that in each of the past four seasons the game has gone to overtime.

2014 - NY Rangers 4 at Los Angeles 5 (Dustin Brown, 10:26 of 2OT)

2013 - Boston 2 at Chicago 1 (Daniel Paille, 13:48 of OT)

2012 - Los Angeles 2 at New Jersey 1 (Jeff Carter, 13:42 of OT)

2011 - Boston 2 at Vancouver 3 (Alex Burrows, 0:11 of OT)

Since 2004, there only has been one split of the opening two games in the Stanley Cup Final. In 2013, the Blackhawks won Game 1 (in 3OT) and the Bruins won Game 2 (in OT) Chicago eventually won the series in six games.

Forty-nine teams have taken a 2-0 series lead since the Final went to the best-of-seven format in 1939. Of those clubs, 44 (89.8%) have gone on to claim the Stanley Cup, including the Kings in each of the past two instances (2012 and 2014).

Lightning rookie Jonathan Drouin told reporters Saturday following the Bolts optional morning skate hed take part in Saturdays pre-game warm-ups. Drouin hasnt appeared in a playoff game since Game 4 against Montreal.

For these playoffs, weve always put 21 in warm-ups, so youve got to show up to the game to see whos going to play, Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said.

In losing three in a row, the Bolts have been outscored 14-5.

Weve got a find a way to get a win here, and it starts tonight, said Lightning center Tyler Johnson, who will be trying to snap a five-game goalless drought of his own.
